Tuesday was arguably the most important day in political history of the last twenty years. I say this because two major historical events occurred yesterday. Twenty-four states voted in primaries, caucuses, and one state convention. The second event was John McCain, and Mike Huckabee showed that money can not buy an election. This is not to say Mitt Romney is not a decent candidate, but the fact is that with far less money John McCain, and Mike Huckabee won several states. The important lessons from the primary process are that we do not want a national primary. We do not want talk radio to completely condemn any candidate. We do not want primary process that splits the Republican Party beyond repair.
We as a Republican Party can not afford to have a national primary, because it would make it impossible for us to get the candidate we want. Looking at it logically if we had a national primary on January 3 Rudy Giuliani would have won handily. That is obviously not what we the voters wanted or we would have voted that way. It is however what the media wanted. They made it very clear saying he was the “inevitable candidate.” Well though the voting process we proved them wrong an opportunity we would not have had in a national primary. We must take the time to carefully pick the candidate we the people want.
The Party also can not afford Talk Radio completely condemning a candidate, because if that candidate wins the nomination they will have an uphill battle to fight with little or no help from talk radio. Talk radio is a medium that the G.O.P. needs to win general elections. This is not to say that talk radio should only speak positively about all candidates. They should feel free to point out the bad things as well as the good things about the candidates. Radio hosts however should be more careful not to get themselves into situations in which they will not be able to support a candidate in the general election. These people have large audiences that are changing and growing on a daily basis. They have a connection with people that allows them to fill in the blanks on candidates good and bad. It is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. We need to immediately work to mend the fences that irresponsible people have torn down in fits of rage. People on both sides need to come together in open communication not conceding principles they stand for, but working together to get all the principles of the conservative movement pushed to the forefront. McCain needs to address a few things that he has said and done to snub Talk Radio. In the same manner Talk Radio needs to correct some of the statements they have made about John McCain. It is though this open dialogue that the Republican Party can refocus itself on the important issues of the conservative movement. I strongly hope that as we go though the next few weeks this will begin to happen so we can move our focus to winning the general election.
The final point I will make is something that we have to fix or our Party and the conservative movement will be buried for many years possibly decades to come. We can not continue down the path of tearing apart the factions of the Republican Party. There is no way to win a general election without a majority of the people that make up the three factions of the Party. We must find a way to rejoin these groups really mending the fractures that have been created. We will not find a solution to this problem in one person or even a few, however it must be found in the people of the Party. It must begin at dinner tables across the country one family at a time. From there it needs to spread all the way to the leaders of this once great movement. This movement will become great once again, far greater than it has ever been, but we must begin the process today. We must begin to fight for every town, in every county, in every state in this greatest country in the world.
We as a country can not afford four years, or one day of a liberal Congress and a liberal President. Must I remind you that they will pull out of Iraq causing mass genocide and real danger to America and its allies around the world? They will destroy our military after all; we can talk to terrorists about our differences. They will also socialize healthcare costing us the taxpayers millions probably billions of additional dollars. The list could go on, but I think this is sufficient to encourage me to start the fight in my hometown to begin a peaceful conservative revolution. I will not be focusing on the past my goal is to bring the conservative principles into the future. Never abandoning those principles Reagan communicated so eloquently.
